James Xiao is corporate vice president and general manager of the Display Thin Film Group at Applied Materials, Inc. In his current role, Mr. Xiao oversees Display CVD, PVD and SEU product divisions' P&L, which have over $2B booking in FY2017, and leads a global team with a growing footprint in the U.S., Germany, Taiwan, China, Korea, India and Japan. Under his leadership, the TFG BU has grown display CVD revenue and profit with over 35% CAGR in the last four years, while gaining market share and capturing new OLED TFE and solar HJT market opportunities, and gained strong PVD market momentum in the fast-growing Gen11 TV segment with a newly-defined product roadmap and successful market penetration.

Until recently, Mr. Xiao served as vice president and general manager for the CVD & EPG Product Division, leading a global team in the U.S. and Asia to support CVD and EPG product and technology development, engineering, operations, field support, product marketing and business management with more than $1 billion in P&L responsibility.

Prior to this, Mr. Xiao was general manager of Solar Sales and Market Development for Applied Materials in China and director of Solar Business Development for the Asia Pacific region, where he was instrumental in creating more than $2.6 billion in revenue for Applied’s solar equipment business in China. Mr. Xiao joined Applied Materials in 2006 with the acquisition of Applied Films, as president of Applied Films in China, where he managed the display, solar, web and glass business and served on the board of directors for an Applied Films China joint venture.

Mr. Xiao holds a bachelor of science degree in applied physics from the Dalian University of Technology and a MBA from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

The display TV industry is quickly investing in G10.5 mass production. >65” TV is growing exponentially driven by emerging new 8K, flexible OLED TV targeting 5G communication and 8K broadcasting formats. The Applied Materials Display and Flexible Technology Group has successfully scaled up PVD and CVD tools to G10.5, with highly differentiated rotary cathode PVD and hollow-cathode gradient CVD integrating IGZO backplane technology. Combined with the newly-developed G10.5 online SEM review tool, Applied Materials’ proven deposition technology will accelerate the ramp up of G10.5 fabs around the world, and enable the next generation OLED TV fab with integrated metal oxide solutions.
